- Co-use with an opioid can cause profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma and death. Shallow or slow breathing, inability to awaken or marked altered awareness requires local emergency help; do not first seek a web spacing or self-reduction plan.
- Alcohol, another benzodiazepine, a sleep medicine, sedating antihistamine, antipsychotic, some antidepressants, anticonvulsants and anaesthetics can add CNS depression. Different brands do not permit rotation or combination.
- Continued use can cause physical dependence; abrupt discontinuation or rapid reduction can trigger life-threatening withdrawal, including seizures. Do not copy a web or another person's taper; the treating professional must individualise and follow it.
- Sedation and unsteadiness increase with age and some older people may be more sensitive. With many medicines, review sleepiness, gait, falls, memory, breathing, liver/kidney status and all OTC products together. The site does not derive a tablet count from age.
