• Check EFFEXOR XR, venlafaxine, extended-release capsule, labelled strength per capsule and target market first. “XR/extended release” is part of dosage-form identity; it does not make an immediate-release tablet, ordinary capsule or same-class medicine directly convertible by milligrams.
• The U.S. public EFFEXOR XR label lists 37.5, 75 and 150 mg extended-release capsules and states that capsules are swallowed whole, not divided, crushed, chewed or dissolved. It also lists a specific opening/sprinkling method for this exact capsule when whole swallowing is not possible; that is a product-label exception, not permission to open, split or ‘halve’ every extended-release capsule.
• The label has relevant warnings about MAOIs, other serotonin/norepinephrine-affecting medicines and multiple medicines. Take pain, cough/cold, migraine, sleep, herbal, alcohol and every prescription product together to a pharmacist or prescribing team for review.
• Do not suddenly self-stop, irregularly alternate or use someone else’s medicine because of short-term feelings, drowsiness or concern about symptoms. Any taper, stop or conversion needs a prescribing-team plan; acute mental-health risk needs local urgent support.
